From the Executive Director | Jo-ell Carson
One of my favorite things about the vet med community is the willingness to share. Whether at the VMA level, clinic level, or veterinarian to veterinarian, it’s always there. And, I believe it’s unique and beneficial to this profession.
Last year, sharing was extended to me. The Minnesota VMA invited me to attend their January board meeting and winter convention. I was excited to see the inner workings of another high-functioning VMA. As a bonus, I would also get to see my daughter, who attends the University of Minnesota. (Yes, I gave her the green light to be a Gopher except when playing the Badgers. At those games, she’s required to break out her Badgeralls and root for Bucky).
Vet Med Magic in Minn
As January drew near, the entire nation watched as circumstances in Minneapolis changed. I didn’t envy the MVMA holding their largest member event, in that city, during those times. Regardless of political affiliation, it was a troubling time to be in Minneapolis. For many reasons, one which included the worry of a mom, I decided to go. I’m glad I did.
What I saw at the MVMA convention is similar to what I’ve seen at WVMA member events: the power of veterinarians connecting with veterinarians—making time for each other even in the toughest of times. It’s energizing, positive, and incredibly necessary. Just like I needed to be near my daughter, it was almost as if the veterinarians needed to be together, too. The MVMA reported that very few members chose not to come. From my vantage point, I would say those who came walked away a little lighter.
Spend Time With Your Herd
The message is this: Make time to spend time with your fellow veterinarians. It’s important and you’ll never regret it. The WVMA board and staff work hard to create exciting and unique member events because we believe in the power of this community. Our goal is to make it easy for you to say “yes” to a day away, out of your clinics and trucks, and out and about with your peers.

We’ve seen the impact of these get-togethers on our members’ lives—at Summer School, Zoo School, Flight School, Vets @ Vortex, Spring Training, and soon, Rustic Reboot. One member at Flight School said it best, “these in-person, outside events are restorative as well as educational.” Well said, Dr. Peter Janssen, well said.
Get restorative at the May 15 Rustic Reboot. This is your chance to let go and let us be the caretakers for a day.
