This course will include a review of body fluid requirements and physiology, including an update on fluid movement between body compartments. This will be followed by fluid requirements for anesthetized patients, a review of the types of fluids used during anesthesia and how to choose which one to use, how to choose and calculate fluid rates, and a discussion on the consequences of fluid overload. We will also discuss newer technology for monitoring fluid responsiveness. The second part of the lecture will focus on how to safely and smoothly recover an anesthetized patient, including videos showing different types of complicated recoveries and how to differentiate and manage them.
