It seems that whenever two or more equine practitioners gather, at some point the conversation turns to the topic of whether pre-purchase exam records can be (or must be) shared with the owner and/or a third party (such as another prospective buyer). One of my partners, Megan Senatori, spoke at a county veterinary medicine association meeting recently, and this was a question that arose. Assuming that this issue may also confront practitioners in other areas of practice, we thought it a good topic to address to the general WVMA membership. Unfortunately, after fairly extensive review of the law and background information, there isn't a clear answer with respect to pre-purchase exam records. However, we do have recommendations for a "best practice" that we believe works well.
