It is inevitable in the life of a veterinary medicine practice that there will be ownership changes. During 2016, we saw a great deal of activity involving ownership transitions in very diverse ways. The most common, by far, involved the purchase of an ownership interest by a current employee of the practice. Frequently, this buy-in was coupled with the retirement of a current owner, or was part of a plan for a future retirement, and in other instances simply reflective of the growth of the practice and the desire of both the employee and the practice to take this next step.
