Introduction to Employee Handbooks
Introductory remarks will focus on the reasons to implement an Employee Handbook, updating and modifying policies, necessary disclaimers, securing employee signatures acknowledging Handbook receipt, and other related general issues.
Alcohol and Drug Policies and Testing
This session will discuss the need for a policy to be included in the Employee Handbook addressing a drug-free workplace, the different types of drug and alcohol testing that employers can adopt, and which testing is recommended at a Veterinary Clinic. The key components from an alcohol and drug testing process will be addressed in detail.
Employers not covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act have discretion to determine what type, if any, of a pregnancy, maternity, and/or paternity policy to implement. In this session, sample pregnancy, maternity, and paternity policies will be discussed. This session will also address pregnancy discrimination.
Other Key Handbook Policies
Certain critical policies that should be included in an Employee Handbook will be discussed, including an Equal Employment Opportunity Statement, benefits section, disciplinary policy, and other important policies to protect the veterinary clinic and/or to enhance employee communications.
Sexual Harassment, Other Harassment, Discrimination and Retaliation Policies and Critical Issues
With the significant media focus on workplace sexual harassment, it has become increasingly important for employers to understand the legal landscape regarding this important issue. This session will review the legal definitions of sexual harassment, and will also review the various protected classes under applicable federal, state, and local laws that prohibit harassment and discrimination for other protected classes as well. A sample policy will be presented and discussed.
How to Conduct Workplace Investigations
This session will focus on practical recommendations for conducting and managing workplace investigations, particularly in regard to employee misconduct such as harassment and discrimination. The need to document during an investigation will be an issue of discussion, but more importantly, how to document will be addressed in significant detail. Attendees will leave this session with a fundamental understanding of the investigatory process and related issues.
Social Media Policies
This session will address strategies for engaging with the various types of social media being used in workplaces. A sample Social Media Policy will be presented and discussed. The session will also address how to address messy social media situations as they arise.
