Dr. Pasch's area of interest is equine reproduction, specifically assisted reproductive techniques including embryo transfer, as well as high risk pregnancies.


Andrew Schmidt, DVM, MS, DACT

Dr. Schmidt's area of special interest is equine reproduction. In particular he enjoys the challenges of fertility evaluations of the mare and stallion, embryo transfer, and insemination of fresh and frozen semen.

Parturition, Obstetrics, and the Postpartum Mare
This will cover a review of normal foaling, followed by a dystocia discussion and description of common postpartum complications, with a focus on placental evaluation and retained fetal membranes.

Pregnancy Diagnosis and Ultrasound Examination
This segment will focus on timing of pregnancy diagnosis, when to perform follow up ultrasound exams, and what one can expect to see on ultrasound at various stages of gestation.

Estrus Suppression
This segment aims to provide an overview of commonly used or well documented methods of estrus suppression in the mare, including a brief physiology review. We will discuss the most effective methods of estrus suppression and talking points for discussions with owners.

Common Challenges and Cycle Abnormalities in the Mare
This will begin with a review of the estrus cycle and seasonality in the mare. We will then go over some of the more challenging aspects of breeding management, with a focus on the spring transition.

Semen Evaluation
This session will provide discussion on the basic semen parameters that may be evaluated on shipped semen, along with additional information on stallion management and semen processing.

Mare Breeding Soundness Exam
This segment will focus on the mare BSE- what are the components of a breeding soundness exam? What information does it give us? When is a full BSE indicated, and when are certain components of the exam recommended?
