The Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Assocation (WVMA)  recognized four members at the 2015 WVMA Annual Convention on October 9 for their 50 years of membership. To receive this  award, a veterinarian must maintiain their membership for 50 continuous years. The following members met  this milestone in 2015.

Wayne Benstead, DVM
Dr. Wayne Benstead graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 1962. He is a small animal veterinarian who spent most of his career practicing veterinary medicine in Delavan, WI. Dr. Benstead started his career in 1963 with Dr. Paul O'Conner. In 1964, he joined a mixed animal practice in Delavan, WI. Dr. Benstead bought that clinic from Dr. Kelsey in 1971 and turned it into a small animal practice. In 1976, he built his own practice called the Delavan Small Animal Clinic. In 1993, Dr. Benstead sold his clinic, but he continues to work part-time.

The Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) honored a retiring Executive Board member at its 100th Annual Convention on Friday, Oct. 9. Kimberly Kratt, DVM, Michael Wolf, DVM and Ann Sherwood Zieser, DVM completed their four-years terms on the WVMA Executive Board.

Dr. Kimberly Kratt represented District 7, which includes Buffalo, Trempealeau, Jackson, LaCrosse, Monroe, Juneau and Vernon

Food and Drug Administration 

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has amended the new animal drug regulations to implement the veterinary feed directive (VFD) drugs section of the Animal Drug Availability Act of 1996 (ADAA). On June 3, the FDA published in the Federal Register the final rule revising the VFD regulations in 21 CFR Part 558. The final rule becomes effective in 120 days. At the same time, FDA revised Guidance for Industry #120, Veterinary Feed Directive Regulation.

The state veterinarian has broadened the restriction against poultry gatherings in a modified order that now prohibits all poultry at any swap meet in the state through the end of 2015. A previous order issued June 10 prohibited swap meets held in conjunction with a county, regional or state fair.

"As long as avian influenza is still potentially in the environment, we need to better manage the gathering of birds to ensure that we are not spreading the virus to new areas of the state," said Dr. Paul McGraw, Wisconsin State Veterinarian.
